우즈베키스탄 공화국은 중앙아시아에 위치한 5개의 공화국들 중 하나로서 국토 면적은 447,000km2이다. 카자흐스탄, 키르기스스탄, 타지키스탄, 투르크메니스탄과 국경을 마주하고 있는 우즈베키스탄은 12개의 주와 1개의 자치공화국(카라칼파크 공화국)으로 구성되어 있다. 우즈베키스탄에는 약 80개의 도시와 86개의 도시형 정착지가 있다. 최신 인구 동향 자료에 따르면, 우즈베키스탄의 인구는 대략 2천만 명에 이르며 이곳에서 약 120개의 종족 및 민족들이 더불어 살아가고 있다. 우즈베키스탄은 대륙성 기후이며, 일조량이 풍부해서 목화 경작에 매우 유리하다. 우즈베키스탄의 주요 작물은 목화와 비단이며, 석탄, 석유, 천연가스 및 금과 다양한 금속, 비철금속이 매장되어 있다. 최근의 조사에 의하면 우즈베키스탄에는 약 120개 민족으로 구성된 2천 여명의 인구가 거주하고 있으며, 그 중 70%가 우즈베크 민족이다. 우즈베키스탄의 초, 중등 교육제도는 12년 과정이며, 7세에 입학을 한다. 초등 교육제도는 4년의 초등학교와 이후 3년제와 5년제 중에서 선택할 수 있는 중등학교로 구성된다. 비록 도시보다 지방에서는 그 비율이 하락하지만, 초등교육을 받는 학생의 비율은 높은 편이다. 전체 문맹률은 1% 정도이다.
1991년은 우즈베키스탄의 동양학 연구에 있어 대단히 역사적인 해가 되었다. 1991년 07월 15일 이슬람 카리모프 우즈베키스탄 대통령의 명령에 의해 외국과의 국제적 관계를 발전시키기 위해서뿐만 아니라 동양 여러 나라들의 역사와 문화에 대한 학술적 연구의 외연을 확장하고 더욱 깊이 있는 연구를 수행할 수 있도록 타슈켄트 국립 동방대학교를 설립하였다. 이는 결과적으로 우즈베키스탄의 동양학 연구 및 한국학연구를 발전시키는데 있어 광범위한 기회를 제공했다.
이곳에서는 동양학 연구에 조예가 깊은 약 300여명의 교수와 강사들이 동양 언어학, 중국언어학, 세계 정치 및 역사학, 대외경제 및 각 지역 연구 학부에서 공부하는 2,000명 이상의 학생들을 가르치고 있다. 이러한 교수 및 강사들 중에는 독토르(박사 학위 상위 과정) 학위 소지자인 40여 명의 학술원 회원, 100여 명 이상의 박사 학위 소지자인 교수와 기타 부교수들로 이루어져 있으며, 모두들 경험이 풍부한 교사들이다. 분명한 것은 타슈켄트 국립 동방대학교가 지속적이면서도 체계적인 발전을 이루기 위한 뛰어난 학문적 교육적 역량을 보유하고 있다는 점이다.
타슈켄트 국립 동방 대학교는 동양 언어학부, 중국언어학부(2015년 09월 개설), 세계정치 및 역사학부, 대외경제 및 각 지역 연구 학부 등 4개의 학부가 있다. 학사과정으로는 언어학 및 언어교육, 번역 이론 및 실습, 역사, 동양 고전 언어학, 철학, 세계 정치, 대외경제 및 각 지역 연구 과목이 개설되어 있고 석사과정 과목으로 문학연구(동양 언어 및 연구 동향), 언어학(동양 언어), 고전 언어학, 동양 고전문학에 대한 재강의 및 훈고(訓告), 역사, 역사 연구 및 역사적 학술적 연구방법, 철학사, 국제관계, 대외경제 및 각 지역 연구, 세계경제 과목이 개설되어 있다. 동방대에는 아랍어, 다리어, 파슈툰어, 힌두어, 우르두어, 터키어, 위구르어, 중국어, 일본어, 한국어, 인도네시아어, 말레이시아어, 베트남어, 영어, 독일어, 프랑스어, 스페인어, 러시아어 학과 등이 있다.
동방대학교의 한국어학과는 1991년 일본어학과의 일부로서 개설되었다. 1993년 ~ 2004년까지 한국학 학부로 존속되다가(한국학부 책임자 – 김문욱 교수), 2004년에 한국어 학과를 포함한 극동 및 남아시아 언어 학부가 새로이 창설되었다(2004년 ~ 2015년 11월까지 한국어학과 책임자 – 김 빅토리아 박사 겸 교수). 요즘에는 한국어학과는 동양 언어학부의 산하에 소속되어 있다(한국 학부 책임자 - Saydazimova Umida 박사).
한국어학과에서는 동양 언어학, 동양 고전 언어학, 철학, 번역 이론 및 실습 분야의 예비 전문가들을 훈련시키고 있다. 한국어학과의 학사과정 교육 과정에는 “언어학 및 언어 교육(한국어)”, “한국문학”, “번역 이론 및 실습(한국어)”이 있으며, 다른 학부에도 “한국 역사”, “한국 경제 및 한국의 각 지역 연구”, “한국의 정치”와 같은 한국 관련 분야가 포함되어 있다. 한국어학과 석사과정의 전공과목은 “언어학(한국어)”, “문학연구(한국어 및 연구 방향)”, “번역 이론 및 실습(한국어)”, 대외경제 및 각 지역 연구(한국), “국제관계(한국)” 등이 있다. 한국어 학과의 교수진은 13명으로 구성되어 있다. 그들 중 1명은 독토르 학위 소지자이고 3명은 박사학위 소지자이며, 1명은 국제교류재단에서 파견된 방문 교수이고 한 명은 KOICA(한국국제협력단)의 자원 봉사자이다. 현재, 한국어학과는 우즈베키스탄 한국 대사관, KOICA(한국국제협력단), 우즈베키스탄 내 한국 교육원, 세종학당, 한국학 중앙연구원, 국제교류재단, 그리고 한국 소재 16개 이상의 대학 등과 협력하고 있다. 현재, 한국과 관련된 학부생의 수는 334명으로, 그 중 한국어학과에 110명, 번역 이론 및 실습 학과에 30명, 한국 경제 학과에 72명, 한국 역사학과에 30명, 정치학과에 32명, 중국어학부의 제2외국어로서의 한국어로 44명, 일본어학과의 제 2외국어로서의 한국어로 16명의 학생들이 있다. 현재 석사학위 과정생은 15명(6명 – 한국 언어학, 4명 – 한국문학, 1명 – 번역 이론 및 실습, 4명 – 한국 경제)이다. 동방대의 산하 기관으로 2개의 콜리지(고등학교 과정)가 있는데, 콜리지에서는 250명 이상의 학생이 한국어를 포함한 동양언어를 공부하고 있다.
현재, 한국어학과의 졸업생들은 한국 대사관, KOTRA(대한 무역투자 진흥공사), KOICA(한국국제협력단), 수 많은 여러 외국기업체에 고용되어 우즈베키스탄과 전 세계 선진국들간 사회 경제적, 정치적, 문화적 관계 발전에 이바지하고 있다. 2015년부터 한국학중앙연구원 측에서 우즈베키스탄의 한국학 발전을 위하여 동방대학교 한국학 연구소에 보조금을 지원하고 있으며, 그 보조금을 이용하여 우즈베키스탄에서 한국학 연구를 발전 강화시키기 위한 목적의 일환으로 온라인 강의 환경 구축, 학술잡지 및 교과서 발행, 국제적인 세미나 개최 및 기타 다른 이벤트들을 계획하고 있다. 타슈켄트 국립 동방대학교는 우즈베키스탄 내 다른 연구소에 비하면 한국학 연구에 대한 훌륭한 토대를 구축해 놓고 있다. 이를 바탕으로 장차 동방대학교 내에 한국학 학부와 같은 새로운 학부를 설립할 수 있기를 기대하고 있다.

Situation and development prospects of Korean Studies in Uzbekistan -Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies-

Uzbekistan Republic is one of the five Republics of Central Asia. The territory of the Republic covers 447, 4 thousand square kilometers. Uzbekistan borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. The Republic consists of 12 regions and the Karakalpak Republic. There are about 80 towns and 86 settlements of urban type here. The climate is continental. A great number of bright sunny days are good for cotton growing. Uzbekistan is one of the most important producers of cotton and silk. If you look at the map of the Uzbek Republic you will see coal, oil and natural gas resources, deposits of marble, non-ferrous and other metals including gold. According to the last data the population of Uzbekistan is 20 million people. About 120 nations and nationalities live on its territory. Uzbeks represent more than 70% (per cent) of the whole population. In Uzbekistan, twelve years of primary and secondary education are obligatory, starting at age seven. This requirement includes four years of primary school and two cycles of secondary school, lasting five and three years, respectively. The rate of attendance in those grades is high, although the figure is significantly lower in rural areas than in urban centers. The official literacy rate is 99 percent.
In 1991 it has become the great historic date for the oriental studies of our motherland. Under the Degree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov dated July 15, 1991, aiming at improvement of education of specialists in Oriental Studies, expanding and deepening scientific researches in the history and culture of Oriental nations as well as development of international relations with foreign countries the Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies was founded. This event provided extensive opportunities for a great advance in the development of Oriental Studies of our country.
Today about 300 skilled professors and teachers with profound knowledge in their subjects are teaching more than 2000 students who study at the Faculties of Oriental Philology, Chinese Studies, World Politics and History, Foreign Economies and Country Studies. There are academicians, with more than 40 of which posses Doctoral Degree, professors, more than 100 of them are Candidates of Science, associate professors, all of them are teachers with great experience. It is obvious that our Institute possesses strong scientific and pedagogic capacities for persistent and systematic development.
The following are the required education trends on Bachelor’s Degree: Philology and Teaching Languages, Theory and Practice Translation, History, Oriental Classical Philology, Philosophy, World Politics, Economy of Foreign Countries and Country Studies.
The following are the required education trends on Master’s Degree: Literature Studying (Oriental languages and research trend), linguistics (Oriental Language), classical philology, recourse and text logy of Oriental Classical Literature History, History Studying and methods of Historical Scientific Researches, History of Philosophy, International Relations, Economy of Foreign Countries and Country Studies, World Economy.
The following oriental and western languages are studied in the Institute: Arabic, Persian, Dari, Pashtu, Hindi, Urdu, Turkish, Uyghur, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Malay, Vietnam, English, German, French, Spanish, Russian. There are four Faculties in Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies: The Faculty of Oriental Philology, the Faculty of Chinese Studies (was opened in 2015 of September), the Faculty of World Police and History, the Faculty of Economy of Foreign Countries and Country Study.
About Korean directions in our Institute: Korean Philology Department was established in 1991 as a part of Japan Philology Department. Faculty of Korean Studies existed from 1993 till 2004 (Head of Korean Faculty – prof. Kim Mun Uk). In 2004 the Faculty of the Far East and South Asian languages including Department of Korean Philology were formed the (Head of Korean Department from 2004 till 2015 of November – Doctor and prof. Kim Viktoriya). Nowadays, the Korean Philology Department is functioning in the Faculty of Oriental Philology (Head of Korean Department –Ph.D Saydazimova Umida). The Faculty prepares specialists in the field of Oriental Philology, oriental classical philology, philosophy, theory and practice of translation. Main Korean educational directions at Bachelor Degree, include the followings: “Philology and languages teaching (Korean language)”, “Literature of Korea”, “Theory and practice of translation (Korean language)”, other Faculties also consist of Korean directions such as “Korean History”, “Korean economy and region studies of Korea”, “Korean Politics”. Majors of Master’s Degree include: “Linguistics (Korean language)”, “Literature studies (Korean language and research direction)”, “Theory and practice of translation (Korean language)”, “Economy of foreign countries and country study (Korea)”, “International Relations (Korea)”. Teaching staff of Korean Philology Department consists of 13 people: 1 of them has obtained Doctor’s Degree, 3 – Candidates of Science, 1 – visiting professor from Korea Foundation, 1 – volunteer of KOICA.
Today our Korean Philology Department collaborates with the following organizations: Korean Embassy in Uzbekistan, KOICA, Center of Education Republic of Korea in Uzbekistan, Institute named after Sejong in Uzbekistan, the Academy of Korean Studies, Korea Foundation, also with more than 16 Universities in Korea. Currently, the number of students at Korean direction equates to 344 (110 – at Korean philology Dep., 30 – Theory and practice of translation Dep., 72 –Korean Economic Dep., 30 – Korean History Dep., 32 –Politology Dep., 44 – Korean language as second language for students on Chinese Dep., 16 – Korean language as a second language for students at Japan Dep.) At Master’s Degree there are currently 15 students (6 – Korean Linguistics, 4 – Korean Literature, 1– Theory and practice of translation, 4 – Korean Economy). Our institute has two Colleges, in which oriental languages are being taught and studied, including Korean (more than 250 students). At present, graduates of Korean Department are being employed at Korean Embassy, KOTRA, KOICA, great number of different foreign companies, make their investments into development of social-economics, political and cultural relationship between Uzbekistan and developed countries in the world. In 2015 the Academy of Korean studies provided Grant to our institute, in which the organization of on-line lectures, issuance of scientific magazines and textbooks, hosting of international seminars and other events were planned with an aim to develop and enhance the Korean Studies in Uzbekistan. The implementation of grant will lead Korean studies in Uzbekistan to achieve a higher level: active scientific-research performance in the field of Korean Studies. In Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies we create a good base for Korean Studies in comparison with other Institutions of Uzbekistan. We hope that, in future our Institute will establish a new Faculty – Faculty of Korean Studies!
